STEVE BRUCE MAY OFFLOAD SUNDERLAND'S ANTON FERDINAND

ABOVE: Anton Ferdinand, Sunderland's defender, may be offloaded by Steve Bruce
24th November 2009

By Ian Murtagh

SUNDERLAND will listen to offers for out-of-favour defender Anton Ferdinand in the New Year.

With the Black Cats emerging as shock Europa League contenders this season, manager Steve Bruce wants Middlesbrough winger Adam Johnson and Wigan full-back Maynor Figueroa, 26, to bolster his squad.

Sunderland’s Irish-American owner Ellis Short bankrolled Bruce in the summer and will provide funds again with Johnson, 22, valued at around £6m and the Honduran £4m.

But Bruce is keen to recoup some of the cash he spends with Ferdinand, 24, one of those players he will consider offloading.

Ferdinand almost joined Spurs in August only for an exchange deal involving Scotland full-back Alan Hutton to collapse at the eleventh hour.
