ALAN IRVINE WARNS NEWCASTLE: YOU'RE NOT IN THE PREMIER LEAGUE YET

ABOVE: Alan Irvine warns Newcastle: You're not in the Premier League yet
23rd November 2009

By Sam Christie

ALAN Irvine has warned Newcastle: You are not back in the Premier League yet. Irvine’s eighth-placed Preston take on high-flying United at Deepdale tonight.

But Irvine, who spent time as the academy director at St James’s Park, has warned his former club that many teams have faltered after getting off to a flying start.

He said: “I expect Newcastle to be contenders for automatic promotion but nobody ís a certainty. You just have to look back in the last couple of seasons. Teams who have been way out in front have been caught or nearly caught.

“Wolves were fl ying last year and ultimately went up as champions but there was a spell where everyone closed a big gap on them. The year before Watford looked like they were home and dry by January but ended up not even in the play-offs.

Irvine laughed off reports linking him with the Scotland job and says he has unfinished business at Preston.

He celebrated his second anniversary in charge of Preston on Friday and said: “I’m hoping to become the manager in charge when Preston are promoted to the Premier League. That’s been my goal since I first came in.”
