MICHAEL Grant hopes new world heavyweight champion David Haye will roar him on to Prizefighter victory next month.

Grant, 26, is a lifelong friend of WBA king Haye.

And he’ll ask his pal to be at ringside when he takes part in the latest quick-fire series at London’s Olympia on December 4.

Grant, unbeaten in 13 fights, will be one of eight light-welterweights trying to be the last man standing in the immensely popular Barry Hearn-promoted event.

He said: “I hope David will be there on the night to watch me. That would give me even more inspiration to win it.

“We’ve known each other since we were in England amateur squads together. I would have been 15 or 16 when I first met David. He’s a bit older than me so he used to look out for me.

“He wasn’t one for training back then but he was so good and so talented that you could see he would go right to the top.

“I really look up to him. I knew he would become a world champion and he’s proved me right.

“We grew up together and, as I’ve seen him from a young age, he’s shown me what you can achieve.

“He’s made me strive to become a world champion as well.

“We’re both slick fighters with similar styles, so I’m looking forward to following in his footsteps.

“I’m proud of David and what he’s achieved and I know he will beat the Klitschko brothers when he has the chance to unify the world titles.”

Grant will have to beat some of the biggest names in the division to win Prizefighter. Former WBA Champion Gavin Rees and ex-European title holders Ted Bami, Jason Cook and Colin Lynes are all on the bill.

Londoner Grant, who won an ABA title in 2005, said: “This is the most important competition of my life.

“Once I win Prizefighter all the doors will open up and it will be a wicked step to take. I can’t wait and I’m really excited.

“I have respect for everyone in Prizefighter and what they’ve achieved but I’m at the stage of my career when I’m peaking and I can’t see anyone causing me trouble.

“I’m going to be so sharp, I feel a lot stronger and I’m just going to be like lightning. My opponents won’t see me coming.”

The full list of competitors is: Ted Bami (London), David Barnes (Manchester), Jason Cook (Maesteg, Wales), Michael Grant (London), Barry Jones (Ferndale, Wales), Colin Lynes (Hornchurch), Young Mutley (West Bromwich) and Gavin Rees (Newbridge, Wales).
