ALBUM - ROD STEWART: SOUL BOOK
ABOVE: Rod goes back to his soul roots here

ROD'S gravelly growl has only got better as the years have knocked, which made his American Song Book seem a slightly weird thing to do.
The Rod myth is all white soul boy, leopard print leggings, spiky hair, sleazy guitar and sexy lyrics.
The American song book was the sound of him putting on his slippers.
He’s on much more familiar territory here, going back to his soul roots, and Rod purists, and those who grew up listening to him in the 80s as kid *cough cough* will be relieved he’s left the Rat Pack stuff behind.
And yet, it still sounds a little too polite and polished in places and like Rod’s not quite giving it his all.
A heartfelt version of What Becomes of the Broken Hearted and If You Don't Know Me By Now make up for it.
