SQUEEZE WHITEHALL

16th November 2009

THE list of senior civil servants getting mega bonuses gets longer.

Even more pen-pushers in 11 government departments are sticking their snouts in a £105 million bonus trough.

That follows the announcement of similar payouts to mandarins at the MoD who have managed to squander billions of our cash on bungled equipment purchases and IT fiascos. Gordon Brown keeps sounding off about axing excessive unearned rewards.

But it’s his government that is responsible for this system of payments.

The same government that has let red tape and bureaucracy expand and muddle and mismanagement increase.

Many people reckon senior civil servants should not be eligible for bonuses in any circumstances, they rake in enough money from their salaries.

And the lower paid ranks should be given proper infl ation and performance-related pay rises instead of one-off “bonuses”.

But if the current system is performance-related, Whitehall bosses should get a REDUCTION this year considering the mess we are all in.
