Centuries from Jacques Kallis and Hashim Alma helped South Africa gain the initiative on a slow first day of the first Test against India in Nagpur.


Zaheer Khan had rattled the visitors, reducing them to 6-2 with the wickets of Graeme Smith and Ashwell Prince.


But Kallis finished on 159 and Amla 115, as South Africa ended on 291-2.Kallis said: “Our plan was to bat through the day. We will try to bat as long as possible and see how it goes.”


India’s West Zone yesterday made the highest ever run-chase in first-class cricket, scoring 541-7 against South Zone.
